Healthy Eating Tip: Hit the Buffet

The buffet can be your friend or foe. It all depends on how you look at it. You can either load up your plate with piles of high fat, high calorie foods with little nutritional value or you can take advantage of the variety and opt to cover your plate with the abundance of healthy foods usually available on any given buffet.

When you have the option to choose, you can spend time to really make the healthier decisions than if you had to order a set meal. Also you're able to determine your own portion size, rather than be tempted with a gigantic meal. You can often choose all kinds of lean proteins as well as veggies and fruits. Just be sure to steer clear of foods that are fried, glistening with butter, and loaded with sugar. When in doubt, ask a server how a food item is prepared.

this is so true I know that everytime I go to a buffet with intentions on pigging out I get a salad loaded with all kinds of great veggies and then I don't have room for the bad stuff.

If I'm going to a special occasion or out to dinner, I *love* it if there's a buffet. As a very health-conscious vegetarian who dislikes mushrooms, can't eat refined grains and is allergic to nuts, it can be difficult to find something appropriate on the menu, especially without causing a fuss and drawing a lot of attention to myself. I get quite irritated, I have to admit, when people comment on what I'm eating (which they seem to feel entitled to do when you've lost weight!) and by being able to select the salads and veggies and things that I want - and control the condiments that go on them - without having to ask in front of a whole table of people, I can get on with enjoying the meal with less awkwardness.

My husband loves going to Golden Corral, and although it's not my favorite place, I actually end up eating pretty healthy there. They have a pretty well-stocked salad bar and they usually have some sort of lean protein there to eat. Most of the time they have the "healthy" dishes labelled with the nutritional info so you know what you're eating.
