We're constantly discussing preparation for the future around here — which doesn't mean we wouldn't know how to put a large amount of cash to use immediately — but I'd like to think most of us would use foresight and take steps to keep much of that money stored away in a safe place.
It seems that I've been giving people the benefit of the doubt, because I was surprised to learn that 70 percent of lottery winners and those who receive large amounts of cash from lawsuits and the like spend their stash within just a few years! Does this surprise you, too?

no - i'm not surprised at all about how quickly people burn through the money. they don't realize how fast things add up and how much in taxes you have to pay each year. i think that people are also quick to do things for their friends and family and that in turn makes more people come and ask you for things. i think that the best thing to do is take a small piece of it that you know you need to pay things off and invest the rest. don't splurge with it all the time...and maintain your current life that way you'll have A LOT to play with for years to come.
