Where Do You Stand: Taking Dance Lessons Before Your Wedding?

The first dance as husband and wife is an exciting moment for all newlyweds. Even though all eyes are on them, it's their chance to be close, tell secrets, and just have fun together before mingling with all their guests. As you know, the songs to most first dances are either romantic or they hold a special meaning to the couple, but some opt for a fun twist on the first dance, choreography and all. But even if you don't have some elaborate routine, many couples, especially those with two left feet, need a little help in the dance department. While I think the first dance should come from the heart, tell me where you stand on dance lessons before weddings. Do you think it looks good to have every step mapped out beforehand, or do you think spontaneity is best?

I don't like to be in the spotlight...so NO I wouldn't do a "fancy" first dance or waste money on dancing lessons....I personally think choreographed dances are silly. JMO

No, I wouldn't do this. There are more important things to spend time and money on before the wedding.

We took a dance class through the community rec center, so it was really cheap. But despite our attempt we never got around to actually planning the dance! We at least knew the steps to do a slow waltz for our dance, despite having to kick my train out of the way the whole time (too much going on to get it bustled!) We looked slightly better than we usually do dancing, so I guess it was worth it. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it or spend the time choreographing a whole routine.

I'm all for it. It doesn't have to be perfect but there is nothing wrong with a lesson or to to bring it all together, especially if your song isn't super slow or has an odd beat

My fiance and I have been taking dance lessons for the last year and a half. Now that we are engaged, we decided we want to tango (our best dance) for our wedding dance, so we will continue our normal dance lessons, but we are going to get some private ones to choreograph our wedding dance!

I think it should be whatever is best for the couple. My boyfriend's idea of dancing is bouncing from side to side without lifting his feet, so I'd probably prefer we had lessons if we were to get married.

smistasan - my boyfriend too! I am not sure he would be totally cool with the idea of dance lessons. We probably won't have a reception with a disco though, we're not that kind of couple...

If the couple went dancing a lot, I could see doing a special first dance, but choreographing a dance when you don't dance regularly seems silly.

Meh. Just be yourself. If you have the time and the money, go for it, but I think it's silly. My husband and I didn't do it, we enjoyed making complete fools of ourselves on the dance floor, haha! Kidding :]

My fiance and I want to do our first dance to a two-step song but our two-stepping knowledge is pretty basic so we are going to take some private lessons before! We take salsa lessons now and we really like dancing so it's an important part of the wedding for us Laughing out loud

I danced for years when I was in school, so the idea of not taking dancing lessons before hand is out of the question for me. I know that when I do get married, I won't have much money, but I don't really care. This is important to me.

I hate to be in the spotlight and we definitely do not want choreographed dance, but we would like to take dance lessons anyway. Most likely swing and blues dancing, so that we can do more than just sway to the the music.

Meh, this just isn't for me (or the fiance). We're not really up for making our guests watch us do anything beyond the ceremony. For us, the reception will be our way to hanve fun with and thank our friends and family for all their support. We've actually talked about not having "our dance" announced...just that our song will play and we'll enjoy it with each other. Whether guests want to watch or enjoy the cake instead is their own decision!

Spontaneity is best but dance lessons are fun. Kind of like physical marriage prep if you don't already know how to dance with each other.

My fiance and I are taking a couple of lessons since we both have two left feet. The lessons have turned out to be a fun activity we've enjoyed doing together. We may sign up for more dance classes after the wedding.

I would go to lessons if I were planning a big elaborate wedding, but when I get married the wedding will probably be fairly small and untraditional. My boyfriend hates being in the spotlight so big wedding or not, I doubt I could coax him into dancing in front of an audience.

I think it's a waste of money, and an additional stress that you just don't need. Just get out some records and dance together while you're picking out your song. That's plenty of practice!

I would like to. But since we're on a budget, dance lessons are not in our list of priorities, so no.

i might do this, but i feel like it would consume a lot of time in an otherwise very busy time (ie: planning a wedding!) but it would be a good workout and very fun!

My boyfriend and I got together because of dance practices. He was my dance partner and we spent so much time together, we've been dating for about 2 years now.

I think it would be funny if we took some dance classes, I mean, something not to pricey. Plus, I'm a horrible dancer, I don't have much rhythm... So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, dance classes would also give some couple bonding time during the wedding planning process. Most of the time the brides to be end up spending a lot of time on wedding websites, talking to caters, planners, etc. while the groom to be comes a long and gives their opinion, but everyone knows, most weddings turn out the way the bride wants. I think the classes would bring some fun and lively hood to the wedding planning process.
