Where Do You Stand? Overlapping First Names

What's in a name? Well, a lot, if your love interest has the same name as your father or your brother! I just had a conversation with a friend who was excited about a really cute guy she met, but the downfall is that he shares the same name as her older brother. I've never dated anyone with my brother's name so I couldn't empathize with her, leaving me asking what the big deal is. I mean, I understand how it could be a little creepy to date someone with the same name as your father, but even still, I don't consider it to be a deal-breaker. So where do you stand on dating someone who shares their name with someone in your family? Have you done it before? Was it awkward? Was it confusing? Or was it not even an issue?

I have the same name my boyfriend's sister, and its a very unique name -- I'm the second person with the name he's met. He calls her by a nickname (that my friends call me), but ALWAYS uses my full name Smiling we transitioned into pet names very early on in our relationship

My sister dated a guy who had the same name as our brother. We never thought it was weird, we just referred to my brother as "Mark*" and my sister's boyfriend as "her Mark*"

    *name changed

Haven't had this happen yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did, really. Hopefully that won't be a problem though. Smiling

My brother married a girl with the same name as our mother. I thought it was weird at first but we've all gotten over it I suppose.

I had to let this adorable guy go who worshiped me because he looked a lot like my brother and shared too many of his personality traits. I mean they were REALLY similar, to the point of being too creepy...some girl out there is so damn lucky cause that guy was a sweetheart and so hot, hot, hot!

Oh man, the funny thing is...the guy I have fallen for doesn't share my father's name...but he's very much like him (the good stuff Eye-wink ). And I wasn't ever raised by my father. How weird is that?

My husband's name is the same as my dad AND my ex-stepfather (who was married to my mom when I got married)...It was kind of weird, but I haven't seen my dad for several years (and I never called him by his first name, anyway!) and we had a nickname for my stepfather because his name was also the same as one of my sister's best friends...she started calling him by a completely different name to avoid confusion, so I ended up doing the same thing.

Oh, it bothers me. It dated two guys with my Dad's name and I hated it. I called one by the full name and the other by a nickname.

Do people actually consider dating someone with the same first name as one of their siblings/parents an actual problem or a dealbreaker?

It hasn't happened to me but if it did, never in a million years would it have ever occured to me that it could be some sort of an issue with the person I happened to be dating. Personally,I just don't see anything at all wrong with it.There are alot of worse things that could happen to a person. It's only a name for goodness sakes....

i'm dating someone who has the same name as my brother and step brother, it gets annoying and awkward. and just the other day my younger brother said "ew how can you even like someone with the same name as me, if i ever met a girl with your name i would automatically think she was grose". and i just replied "well i didn't get to pick his name, so i don't really have a choice Smiling "

My brother's gf has the same name as me ... at first, I was a little freaked bc she and I have a LOT in common but I got over it because we get along really well & she's a super sweet girl. And if we're all together, the family's tried out a few different ways to differentiate. I'm 1 and she's 2 or she's 2 and I'm 1 or they call her by her whole name or "his". Always gets a laugh.

Wow that would be weird to be dating someone with the male variation of your name or the same name, wouldn't be a deal breaker.
My fiance's name is the same as my little cousin and his father but it doesn't matter. It would be a little strange to be dating a guy with the same name as my father though.

I don't really think of my dad as "Bruce," I think of him as "Dad." So I don't know if I'd have a problem with dating a Bruce. Someone with my brother's name, though ... might be touchy but I could get over it.

For a while I dated someone who had the same name as my grandfather, my uncle and my cousin (we recycle names a LOT in my family). Family reunions would have been very confusing! Luckily my husband's name is unique to him.

Not exactly related, but still funny: In my husband's family there's a woman who married a David; then that one died and now she has a "companion" named David. I want to say her first husband was a David too. Now THAT would be weird.

My brother married someone with the same name as me (first and middle) so now we have identical names. It's annoying more to her than to me... it was my name first! ; ) She will be very happy when I get married and take a different last name.

My boyfriend and brother share the same first name, but we call my brother by his middle name. I haven't been in that position where I call my brother and my boyfriend the same exact name. But if that happens, I don't think I'll be bothered by it. I don't really call my boyfriend by his name anyway.

My boyfriend and brother share the same name: Joshua. It's a fairly common name Smiling
I just call him "my Josh" and my brother is "bubba Josh". My family call's him "Kiki's Josh" and then "Josh".
My mom does something a little different. She calls my Josh: "Joshua D" (his last name starts with a D) and my brother is: "Joshua Lee" (his first and middle name).

It's not really weird at all. I don't think I even thought about it at first. My brother has joked about it, but everyone's really cool about it. It's a common name Smiling and we have a lot of that weird coincidence stuff happen in my family:
    - my sister is dating a guy that has the same name as our nephew
    - my boyfriend's, my sister's ex, and my cousin all have the same bday
    - my sister and my brother's best friend turned family friend have the same bday
there's more but I won't continue to bore you Eye-wink

this isn't directly related, but my husband and three of his close friends all have the same name. it becomes incredibly hard to tell stories because everyone is always asking, "which one???!"

My current bf has the same name as one of my brothers. I have 3 bros and all have very common names so I figured I couldn't narrow the dating pool by eliminating every guy who shared their names.

We just call them Matt 1 and Matt 2 at family gatherings or refer to them as Bean's Matt and Matt Matt. Mostly I call him by a pet name though...

Okay. This is where it gets fun. When I met my boy and I told him my name, he laughed in fits and starts. Apparently his sister has the same name as me. And his mother. And his grandmother. And his great-grandmother. Basically, I don't think I could EVER marry this man because it would be some weird Freudian Oedipus thing. But I heart him all the same. haha.
