Obama to Give Up His BlackBerry, Email to Soon Follow

Sad news for President-elect Barack Obama. The BlackBerry-addict who is often photographed with his trusty Curve on his belt and is always checking his BB while en route, will soon be bidding his favorite gadget farewell due to email security concerns. According to The New York Times, Obama has already started slowing down communication to friends and family from his personal email account; even though he hopes to be the first American president to have a laptop on his desk in the Oval Office.

This isn't the first time a new president has had to say good-bye to personal email accounts. Before George W. Bush was inaugurated, he had to send this message, from his personal email address G94B@aol.com, to his close contacts:

Since I do not want my private conversations looked at by those out to embarrass, the only course of action is not to correspond in cyberspace. This saddens me. I have enjoyed conversing with each of you.

As for Obama, it's still being decided whether or not he can keep using email, which is sad news in itself, but the hardest part has got to be seeing his BlackBerry go bye-bye. Hey, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

I never even thought about this. I don't think I could give up email, texting or IM's. I do get that there is a huge risk.

Wha?!?! That sucks big time. I don't really understand why he can't keep a cell phone or use e-mail. Especially given all the super-top-secret technology the military has... you'd think they could keep his technology locked down. Hm.

That stinks because you figure being as busy as he'll be and in another state the best way he'd communicate with people would be through e-mail.

As for phone calls, he'll be surrounded by secret service all the time so surely someone would have a phone if he needed.

that's really sad though. and I agree with evildorkgirl, wouldn't they have some sort of top secret stuff? or maybe they do and they're using this as a cover up?? hmm...

Man, that sucks! Can't imagine not having my iPhone. You'd think they would find a way around keeping him safe wouldn't involve abstaining from technology but oh well.

even if they did have supersecret technology, if anyone ever happened, an issue of national security or an international crisis, then they would be forced to go back into his private files and lift everything...and that's pretty likely

it totally sucks and i would hate to be in the position to lose all contact, but i understand why he's doing it.

Geez... I truly don't know what I'd do if I couldn't e-mail or use my cell phone anymore. I know that's gotta suck. But as tech savvy as Obama seems to be, I'm pretty sure he'll figure out some way to make using technology more secure, or at least I hope so.

Well, really, even Bush's farewell e-mail to his private contacts (aka friends?) got leaked, seeing as you have it posted up there? What would have happened if he sent a personal message to whoever leaked that one, it could have been bad. I agree that it must be hard to give up technology but it's probably best for Obama right now.
