Would You Eat This Porter Cheese?

At a dinner party over the weekend, I tried Cahill Porter Cheese — an Irish cheddar cheese marbled with malty, bittersweet porter beer. Strangely enough, the mild taste of the cheddar cheese perfectly complements the caramel, chocolatey flavor of the beer. Some guests did not enjoy it, but I can't stop thinking about how it would make a unique, tasty grilled cheese sandwich.

I would definitely try it, and probably love it as I love imported cheddar and porter on their own. I bet it would make a wickedly delicious homemade mac and cheese... Yuuuummmmm!

It's delicious! It also, incidentally, makes a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich when dotted with worcestershire sauce as well. Amazing.

Funny you mention grilled cheese - I used to go to a restaurant that served this as a grilled cheese with dark bread and pear butter. It was so amazingly good.

Mmmm, yum! It's one of my favorites!

The only place I was able in find it in Boston was Trader Joe's...I haven't looked for it in Knoxville. Probably won't find it. Sticking out tongue

Wow, I was just looking at this in the store! I like to have a couple of nice cheeses on hand to pair with wine, but I wasn't sure about porter cheddar paired with a dessert wine. I was thinking about having just an alcohol-cheese party, since there's also brandy cheddar and a couple other booze-infused cheeses.

I often like cheese best when it's melted because of texture issues(big fan of mac and cheese and grilled cheese) but I love porter and I like a lot of Irish cheeses. Sounds good.

I don't think I can get past the appearance... it looks a little too much like some kind of headcheese. Ugh.

I tried this honestly only because it had my last name on it! My boyfriend and I saw it at Whole Foods this summer and just had to try it. It was unique, but not my favorite type of cheese if you're going to be snacking. It's nice for small tastes, perhaps paired with nuts or other snacks, but if you're just looking for a cheese and cracker combo, this might not be the best choice.

    Sure, I'd try it.

I work for a gourmet food retailer, we sell a Wine Cured Goat Cheese (known as The Drunken Goat) that is incredible! So I'd be open to trying other drunken cheeses.
