Watching the first 48 i would have said memphis, dallas, miami and detroit were the top 4.

i've always wanted to watch Dr. G but it clashes with another show i think??? I'm all into the crime shows, bothe reality and fiction which is why I love A&E.

These lists are inaccurate, and warned against by several research and government organizations.

For example, it is unfair that St. Louis is on that list. The urban St. Louis City and suburban St. Louis County of the St. Louis metropolitan area are *separate* municipalities, and so the murder statistic is exaggerated.

Chicago, however, is under-represented because its sprawling suburban areas with low crime hide its high crime areas (which are much more dangerous than those in St. Louis)

It makes me sick that St. Louis makes this stupid list every year.

Bri, I'm pretty sure these lists just pertain to the city limits, so St. Louis would be referring to the city of St. Louis, not St. Louis county. And Chicago suburbs wouldn't factor into the ranking for Chicago.

Chicago was listed as not available along with most cities in IL for some reason. Its funny to think that Youngstown Ohio has more crime than Compton CA

That is strange, mydiadem. I wonder if a high percentage of the crimes in Compton goes unreported? (I have no clue whether this is true, it's just the first thought that came to mind.)

Good point lilkimbo, all I know is that living in Philly there are lots of areas I wouldn't go. And Camden, well, I don't even like driving through it on the high way. Makes no sense how what should be prime waterfront real estate is expensive South Jersey could be so bad?!

parts of oakland are pretty bad, but for the most part it's a great city. of course, i only work here... in a high security building, in one of the better neighborhoods... but still!

I'm not surprised Oakland is on that list. I live about 30-45 minutes away...its kind of ironic because I live in the suburbs of the safest largest city in the US.

foxie - What's up with Indianapolis? I can understand the problems with New Orleans. Currupt state government (now being cleaned up), corrupt local government, large percentage of locals who feel everyone "owes" them something.

I totally agree, being that I grew up in Oakland in the 80's in a tough neighborhood when crack was first on the scene and things were crazy I don't see Oakland the same way, I know there is way too much violence but from where it was to what is now, what it's becoming, and what it has the potential to be ..again I'm a little surprised, but I do have to agree there are about 2 areas in Oakland ( East Oakland really) that are bad and make up for most of the crime over all the rest of the city is nice.

LOL and as far as Compton is concerned it is no longer 1980-1990 and NWA and Easy E do not rule the world ahahahah the demographic of the area has changes slightly and there has been and influx in businesses in the area.

i'm pretty sure detroit's been one of the "most dangerous" cities since i was born and i've never had a problem here lol. at least we're on some sort of list i guess haha

I lived in the murder capital of the world one year...even though there were only 14,000 people in the city! Crime can happen anywhere, unfortunately.

As far as inner city crimes in traditionally bad areas a lot of the crime in that area is very focused. I grew up in a very rough part of LA, but as long as you managed to stay out of gang violence you were relatively safe and even gangs members have their own "rules" and honor they follow. You hear a lot about respect, I never understood needing respect in jail, but it seems to be important to them.

Well apparentally Dallas improved our murder statistics from a couple years ago.

New Orleans is just dangerous. Has been for years. A friend of mine was chased and then violently mugged on a relatively busy(pedestrian traffic) street just after 10 when businesses were closing. She was banging on doors and windows for help and the employees just looked away. Thank God all they wanted was her purse and wedding ring. The cop asked her why she was out by herself after dark. She said because she is a grown woman and this was a busy street. He told her that doesn't matter here.

Just think, next summer 35,000 youth will be in New Orleans next summer for a national youth gathering.
