Michael Phelps Will Be the New Face of Subway

Move over, Jared. Subway's got a new guy in town, and his name is Michael Phelps. The mega-medal Olympian continues to score endorsements faster than his swimming records. He's now landed an exclusive fast food deal to represent Subway beginning early next year. As Phelps puts it:

Subway restaurants have always given me the options that I am looking for — whether that's healthy sandwiches before a big meet or the tasty meatball sub that I treat myself with. I was ready to take my Subway fandom to the next level — I really think of Subway as a champion food option.

The exclusive fast food deal has left many industry experts puzzled, considering the swimmer unabashedly campaigned for a relationship with McDonald's during the Summer games. But the announcement isn't the first surprise move by Phelps, who shocked everyone when he declined to appear on the cover of the Wheaties box — as many Olympic champions have done — in favor of endorsing Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes. Do you think Phelps is an appropriate fit for Subway?

I guess I would rather look at him than Jared, but this won't affect how much I go to Subway (about once a week)

I just wish his face was a bit easier to look at...I know that's mean but his face just doesn't do it for me. And wasn't he the athlete that has that insanely unhealthy diet? I wouldn't necessarily look to him for nutrition advice.

as for the new face of subway, i just think he's in it for whatever company can give him the most $$. shrug it's not going to push me to buy subway any more or less.

This is better than the Frosted Flakes deal. I love me some Frosted Flakes, but that's way too much sugar for a kid.

He's waay too ugly for me to go to subway for. Besides, in all honesty...i'm not impressed by him or his 8 medals.

I love Phelps! I would much rather see ads with him in them than with Jared. His face is tolerable but his body... wow! His abs have abs lol.

youruglytoo - hahaha, i'm ugly! I'm not jealous of his success. I'm successful. The fact that the olympics have "sports" like ping pong completely discredit their value. Once they do away with this nonsense sports, I'll respect the winners.

He is an amazing swimmer, and probably a cool person, but he is not a very good actor. Hopefully they won't make the commercials too cheesy, and make him look stupid. I guess he has to strike while the iron is hot, but I hope he doesn't ruin his image along the way. It would be so sad to see his wonderful accomplishments outshined by a bunch of advertising and media crap.

And I don't feel too bad for Jared since I'm sure he has done pretty well for himself financially as a result of his Subway gig. He was a good spokesperson, though, and his story about losing weight with Subway was effective I think.

Love Phelps, love reading about his ridiculous diet, and as a former sandwich artist, love that he is now Subway's new face.

Of course I'll miss Jared Smiling

I think it's funny people think he has a horrible diet. He needed all those calories, and if you were in like 1/10th the shape he's in, maybe then you got room to judge.

And are we sure he's not going to do commercials alongside Jared? That seems to be a popular format with athletes plugging Subway.

The Olympics is not primarily sports...that's why its called the Olympic GAMES! I don't really consider Phelps a good fit for Subway. Besides, who can't tell he's just in it for the money?

I don't pay attention to this stuff either way but I just love how the sandwich is superimposed in this picture, and that funny thing he's doing with his mouth.

I have a love/hate with Subway. The ones near my house are awful. They run out of food by like 7:30 and close by 9! Come on. I've ended up relying on Wendy's and Taco Bell for my midnight fixes. When all I really want is a big sandwich made with ingredients that are not present in my refrigerator.
