A few years ago, Oprah had a 28-year-old woman who'd already had Botox. My friends and I gasped. "Who needs Botox at 28?" we wondered. Fast-forward three years, and our incredulity seems almost quaint; I know women who began getting Botox in their early 20s. (For the record, yours truly has not tried the 'tox.) Next up: teenagers. One eighteen-year-old woman shares how multiple skin care clinics advised her to start getting Botox. (She was horrified.) The idea, as many dermatologists will say, is to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place.Eighteen-year-olds are adults, so of course they can partake in cosmetic treatments if they like. But seriously, what teenager should even be thinking about Botox? Do you think these clinics should suggest injectables to teenagers, or does the idea depress you? Source

Here's a sign of the times: In Rio de Janeiro, poor people can get free Botox for the next nine days. The Brazilian Society of Esthetic Medicine is giving free Botox injections, laser hair removal, acne treatments, chemical peels, and varicose vein treatment. If you earn less than the equivalent of $250 a month, your aesthetic wishes are covered (temporarily, at least).

How is it free? The treatments are given by doctors and estheticians in training. I'm not sure what to think of this story. On one hand, yay for charity and giving people a bit of luxury. On the other hand, about one in four residents of Rio live in a favela, making me think that — especially in this rough global economy — poor Brazilians have much bigger concerns than furrowed brows.

Remember learning about Charles Darwin and his theory of natural selection? Along with examining fossils and mockingbirds, the scientist loved to study faces. He concluded that human facial expressions were the results of muscle and brain signals instinctively reacting over years and years of evolution.

Fast forward about 150 years and I'm wondering what Darwin would think about Botox. According to an article in Discover Magazine, Bernhard Haslinger, of the Technical University of Munich, had an idea. Why not paralyze some faces and run brain scans to analyze emotional triggers? Men are increasingly becoming hooked on beauty products because they are unhappy about stealing our moisturiser and wearing their own eyeliner. Now, The New York Times tells how use of botox amongst our menfolk is on the rise. The paper states that Allergan has started marketing botox to men, with the help of Olympic gold medal swimmer Mark Spitz.

Apparently, plastic surgeons say that men often require higher doses than women because of the structure of their faces. Slightly thicker skin plus more 'angry' brow lines and horizontal forehead lines mean that men generally get injections in slightly different facial areas to women, who are more likely to complain about vertical lines between the brows.

An article in today's New York Times discusses the use of Botox among the less fair sex. Allergan has started marketing Botox to men, with the help of Olympic gold medal swimmer Mark Spitz. According to plastic surgeons, men often require higher doses because of the structure of their faces and skin and usually target brows and forehead lines.

One of the most interesting points the article brings up is that even men that do get injections wait longer between appointments than their female counterparts. “Men tolerate the return of wrinkles better,” says Dr. Alan Gold, the president of the American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “They’re not as bothered as quickly. Women sit in front of a mirror putting on makeup every day and are acutely aware of changes.”

"Botox? I think it's fantastic and also horrible. I mean, they've come up with this stuff that can make you not look angry. But you have to use it sparingly. While I think it's important to keep an open mind about cosmetic surgery – as far as I'm concerned it's a personal decision that everyone has to make for themselves – I was however, both intrigued and somewhat concerned to hear about the latest trend in facial surgery. Apparently women don't want that taunt, stretched-out, shrink-wrapped look that was so in vogue ten years ago (think how Cher's face looks; super-tight skin, plumped lips and a skinny nose). Instead they want what surgeon Dr. Frederic Brandt has become the purveyor of: Welcome to The New New Face.

According to the Observer Woman magazine Dr. Brandt, who has a number of well-known celebrity clients, specialises in what's known as the Y lift where filler is injected into the area just below the cheekbones. Instead of creating that old-fashioned, vacuum-packed look, this encourages a plumped-up youthful effect. Now it's all about having a face as round and chubby as a baby's with apple-shaped cheeks and plump, dewy skin.

Celebrities like Madonna and Demi Moore (no accusations of surgery, of course) epitomise the New New Face. Note the wide, smooth forehead plus big, wide eyes with no lines, a straight (not upturned) nose and full, slightly turned up lips (instead of a puffy trout pout); as well as unbelievably dewy, plumped-up cheeks. Fillers and injectables, which can help create that plumped-up look, are on the increase according to reports. In the US alone there has been a 754 percent increase in the number of non-surgical procedures done since 1997 compared to a 114 per cent increase in surgery.
