Butterflies in pastel yellow, pink, and khaki color tones are a wonderful inspiration for a baby shower's look. Start by covering the table with a pretty neutral-colored tablecloth. Serve the brunch food on pink platters and let each guest use a pretty butterfly plate. Serve both the mimosas and sparkling mocktail in modern square wine glasses. Add a touch of elegance by using your best silverware and nice napkins. Even though the event is in the morning light candles in embellished hurricane lamps.

Arrange a beautiful bouquet of yellow flowers. Pink diaper pins are the perfect finishing touch when delicately pinned to the napkins.

At a baby shower, it's incredibly important to have a nonalcholic specialty drink. That way the mother-to-be can join in the festivities. For Denise's baby shower brunch, I'll offer guests mimosas and spiced pomegranate sparklers.

The concoction is made with a cinnamon-spiced pomegranate juice and sparkling water. Do take the time to make the garnish — frozen whole cranberries — because it's a lovely addition to the drink.

After a rich, savory brunch have the young mother open up her gifts. While guests shower the lady of honor with baby toys, set up a small Belgian waffle bar. Place the batter in a pretty pitcher and plug in several waffle irons. Stack plates and arrange toppings — chocolate sauce, whipped cream, fresh berries, maple syrup, etc. — buffet style near the waffle irons. Once all the presents have been opened, invite everyone to Belgian waffles. For a more diverse spread, purchase dainty pastries from your favorite bakery. When hosting a baby shower, be sure to consult the mother-to-be before selecting a menu. Her appetite may have changed, so ask her what she wants to enjoy at the party. My pal Denise has requested a delicious spread of savory brunch dishes. Thus the menu will consist of a crisp breakfast pizza made with hash browns and two types of cheese, home fries with peppers and onions, and crunchy slices of fried bacon. The pizza recipe calls for sausage, but I'll make a couple pork-less pies for the vegetarians in attendance.

I have two daughters, one is getting married in September and one is having a baby in September. Would it be OK to combine their showers and have one big one as opposed to two smaller ones? — Curious Mom Melinda

Dear Curious Mom Melinda,

While it makes perfect sense to simply combine the two showers, I can almost guarantee that your daughters would have some hurt feelings if you went that route. Since each has their own exciting news to celebrate, sharing a shower could take away from their individual joy.

I know showers can be expensive, but each of your daughters deserves their own moment in the spotlight. If you keep the guest lists down to just close friends and family, and if you have the showers at your home or at a friend's home, it'll be easy to keep the costs down. At the end of the day and after all the hard work is behind you, I bet you'll be glad that you showered your girls separately. Congratulations to them and to you!

Set the Table With Salad

Over the weekend Fab and I attended the Junior League of San Francisco's — a great organization that helps mothers in need — annual luncheon and fashion show. Instead of having a boring buffet or walking waiters, the tables were set with ingredients to make-your-own salad. Having to pass platters was a great way to start conversations between the unacquainted guests.

Serving a set table of food is more affordable than hiring caterers and waiters. This exceptional, assembled-meal idea would work wonderfully at a bridal or baby shower. Here's how you do it:

Place a plate of greens in front of each chair.
In the middle of the table, set platters of grilled chicken, smoked salmon, onions, capers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, fresh fruit, etc.
Add depth by filling martini glasses with other ingredients such as fresh mozzarella, nuts, and dried figs.
Fill small glasses with different types of dressing and arrange next to the platters.
Place rolls on small plates next to each setting and fill tall tumblers with grissini (breadsticks).
Be careful not to overcrowd the table. Fab accidentally spilled her Sauvignon Blanc in the chicken!
