Wouldn't it be great if everything holiday-related was as straightforward as sprinkled sugar cookies? Office gift giving is a gray area for many employees, especially if you're new to the company and aren't sure of holiday protocol. The presence of multiple supervisors and several colleagues make it difficult to separate those who should receive a gift (if any) from those who don't need to be included. Will your boss receive a gift from you this year?

Unbelievable Work Excuses, According to You

At the beginning of the week I told you about Careerbuilder's recent survey that asked bosses for the most ridiculous excuses they've heard from employees calling to say they'd be missing work. You all responded with stories of unbelievable excuses you've heard or used, and below are some that made my eyes pop! Some are true and some are not — which do you think is most outrageous?

"I got apricot scrub in my eye when I was washing my face. I cut my eye so I can't come in."
A girl called in one day because she forgot to put her clothes in the dryer, and her dryer was old, so it would take several hours for her clothes to dry. By then it was not worth coming in to work that day.
Someone called in sick by saying a wasp was in the closet holding all the work clothes, and the next day the worker called in say with a reaction to a wasp sting.
"You know how when you are drifting off to sleep and you jerk awake? One woman claims she got whiplash that way!"

The Most Ridiculous Excuses For Missing Work

There are two main points that I took away from reading the results of a recent Careerbuilder survey: Some bosses actually drive by employees' homes when they've called in sick, and some people will say anything to get out of going to work. Both parties are guilty, but the boss might be doing more damage than the employee in this case.

Thirty-one percent of the employers surveyed said they follow up with employees who call in sick, some require doctor's notes, others check in by calling, and a creepy percentage drives by the employee's home. The employers reported actual excuses they've heard, and the most unusual responses are below. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but really, most of these are ridiculous. Which do you think is the worst?

Employee didn’t want to lose the parking space in front of his house.
Employee hit a turkey while riding a bike.
Employee said he had a heart attack early that morning, but that he was “all better now."
Employee donated too much blood.
Employee’s dog was stressed out after a family reunion.
Employee was kicked by a deer.

It's Boss's Day! Are You Sending an E-Card?

To all of you boss ladies out there, Happy Boss's Day! October 16 marks the holiday for showing our bosses how much they are valued, and with 56 percent of you respecting your superior it seems there is a lot of thanks to go around.

Boss's Day might be slightly uncomfortable for someone that isn't used to singing her boss's praises directly, but as long as it comes off as a genuine thank-you your boss will welcome your effort in reaching out. Remember, it's very possible to be seen as a kiss-up in this situation, so don't go over the top in expressing your appreciation.

Most TV bosses are modeled after mythical professional monsters or clueless middle managers, so I've always been intrigued by the shifty hierarchical relationships on House. Dr. Lisa Cuddy is the Dean of Medicine and the smart and stable boss to Dr. House's defiant villain employee character. Cuddy has to constantly fight House's inability to walk the line, but at the end of the day he does respect her. Most of us can't disrespect (or disregard) our bosses the way House does, but not all bosses are worthy of your admiration and esteem. Has your boss earned your respect? Photo courtesy of Fox

Would You Report Your Boss For a Crime?

New reports indicate that Anne Hathaway's ex-beau Raffaello Follieri was turned in to the FBI by his administrative assistant. A lot of you have jobs that fall under the administrative professionals umbrella, and most people I know could call themselves part of that club at some point or another. As much as some of the basic responsibilities can be frustrating to the point of exasperation, I'd rather stand at the copy machine for 10 hours straight and spend overtime at the shredder than work for a criminal. Would you have reported your boss if you had something incriminating on your conscience?

Can You Beat This Worst Boss Ever Story?

In honor of hard working citizens who deal with irrational bosses daily, Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, ran a contest asking for submissions of bad boss stories. The worst boss story award went to a woman from Kansas named Joan, who was demoted for planning a company outing to a baseball game that happened to fall on a day when it rained.

Although she planned it two months in advance, Joan's boss blamed her for purposely choosing the day because she knew it was going to rain. She was punished with a demotion from manager to assistant manager, pay-cut and all. Later, the boss requested that Joan organize the company picnic, and when she declined the boss told the board that she refused to take on the responsibility.
