No time to run to the florist? Step outside and gather pretty, colorful Fall leaves. Fold white cardstock in half for a simple place card.

Even on a budget, you can achieve a beautiful and elegant atmosphere for Thanksgiving dinner. Cover the table with a brown cloth. Search for a tablecloth that is on sale, or if you have access to a sewing machine, purchase some cheap fabric and sew a tablecloth. Shimmery paper makes an affordable place mat. Don't purchase new china; instead, use what you have on hand. Plain cotton napkins are environmentally friendly and inexpensive.

For a set of wine glasses, cutlery, and tealight votive holders, look no further than Ikea. It's a great place for large quantities at a low price.

Add an element of nature to the table with homemade place card holders. Write the names on the same paper as the place mats. Cut out and attach to a pinecone or tree spur with a satin ribbon. Avoid going overboard on the flowers; one simple bouquet is enough. Purchase the flowers at your local supermarket (instead of at a floral shop) and arrange yourself. Safeway and Trader Joe's usually have luscious bouquets for under $10.

For election night, go patriotic with the decor. Serve the food on modern, red trays. Since Liberty and I are hosting our bash at a local bar, the napkins and plates will be paper and plastic. Tie red, white, and blue balloons to the bar ends. Serve the drinks in Obama or McCain cups. Arrange a bouquet of red, white, and blue flowers. Hang a stars and stripes banner above the door, so guests know they are at the right bar. Put white candles in red glass votives and place them on the bar tables. When guests arrive, offer them a metallic star necklace.

Dress Your Table With Cinnamon and Roses

Walking around the tasting tent at the Food Network NYC Food and Wine Festival, I came across a fabulous decorating idea — it's perfect for Fall or the holidays — that I plan to re-create in a tablescape. You can to, here's how to:

Start by covering the table with a simple cloth. Arrange a thin layer of gauzy fabric over the tablecloth.
Sprinkle the table with rose petals in a color that matches the party's theme. Place the cinnamon sticks around the rose petals.

This is an inspiring idea that can translate into many different table decorations. You could wrap twine around cloth napkins and place a cinnamon stick inside each one. Or make placecard holders by cutting a slit into the side of the cinnamon and sliding a piece of labeled cardstock inside. What do you think? Have you ever used cinnamon sticks as party decor?

Skull votives will glitter from afar, so set on shelves and windowsills.

Serve the cocktails in simple, clear glasses, so the eyeball ice cubes are clearly visible. Cover the chandelier and windows with stretchable spiderwebs. A vibrant bouquet of orange roses adds a splash of color.

Upon arrival at the pumpkin patch, choose a location for your picnic. Look for a large table that is isolated, but easy to access with your cooler and supplies. Pack the salad, drinks, and ice in a large, wheeled cooler. Put the cheese and other nonperishable food in a picnic basket.

Pour the soup into thermoses and place inside the basket. Cover the table with an orange tablecloth and set a bouquet of sunset-colored Gerber daises in the center. Serve the food on brown paper products and the cocktails in clear plastic tumblers. Bring plastic utensils, but remember to recycle when you are finished eating.

If you're lucky enough to have access to a barn, host the hoedown inside. Open the doors and place a long table covered with a red bandanna-print tablecloth in the middle of the space. Set the table with blue bandanna-print napkins and divided plastic plates. Serve the food buffet-style on another table. Plate the brisket on a large white serving platter and spoon the beans into a matching white bowl. Outside of the barn, light a fire in a fire pit. Create a circular seating area around the pit with bales of hay. Place the keg and punch nearby under a tree. Stack etch-it cups next to the keg and have guests label the cups with their name. A bouquet with Fall's beautiful colors adds a touch of elegance to this rustic soirée.
