Money Tip: Set Aside What You're Saving on Gas Gas is now going for about half of what we paid at the pump through the Summer, and the reduced cost is a welcome retreat from the strain that filling up had been causing consumers. We can hope the days of gas price-induced desperation (remember the new dad who named his baby boy after a radio show for a $100 gas card?!) are behind us, and before we go forgetting the damage gas prices did to our budgets, let's take the opportunity to do something with the extra money we're saving. We managed to make it when our money was going into the tank instead of staying in our bank accounts, which means we might not miss at least some of that disposable income if it was out of our reach.

Survey: Gas Prices Fall Nearly 53 Cents in Two Weeks Survey: Gas Prices Fall Nearly 53 Cents in Two Weeks A national survey shows gas prices continue to decline, tumbling nearly 53 cents a gallon in the last two weeks. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline at self-serve stations was $2.78 Friday. Midgrade was at $2.93 and premium was at $3.05.

I'm Asking: What Are Gas Prices in Your Area? My mom was driving and talking on the phone to me when she interrupted to gasp at a sign for $2.93 gas. Not quite the $0.99 per gallon days that we all mourn, but it's definitely an improvement from the $4 or more gas we'd almost gotten used to. What's gas going for in your area these days?

Sitting in traffic this weekend, I stared at the cars surrounding me thinking about how much money it takes to simply get from here to there. Maintenance costs can be highly expensive but those are occasional expenses — it's filling up the tank that can cause frustration on a more regular basis. Is Google Searching For Public Policy Answers? Google wants to get the US economy running on clean energy. This week Google's nonprofit announced a plan to cut the use of fossil fuels in the US before 2030. For $4.4 trillion "Clean Energy 2030" would help end the use of coal and oil to generate electricity.

The company is expanding its WeCar car sharing service to capitalize on what The Wall Street Journal says is a growing industry. Enterprise is moving slowly with its venture, and will at first only supply cars in business-to-business arrangements with companies that will make the cars available to employees.

The South Needs Some Serious Gas Relief After Hurricanes  Fallout from Hurricane Ike and Gustav has spiraled into massive gas shortages in the Southeast. Drivers in Nashville, TN, where the problem is the worst, wait in long lines and some follow tankers around in hopes of being the first to fill up before a station goes dry. In western North Carolina local governments have been forced to cancel programs, since there's not much gas to travel to activities.
